About SnowsDayCalculator.com
We are a team of weather analysts, data scientists, and parents who got tired of guessing whether school would be open the next morning. So we built something better.
Our Story: Born From a Parent’s Frustration
It was a Tuesday evening in February 2018. Outside, snow was falling steadily, and two inches had already accumulated on the driveway. The forecast said another three to five inches overnight. Tayyab Amin, a certified weather analyst and father of two school-age children in suburban Ohio, was doing what millions of parents do every winter — refreshing his local news website, checking three different weather apps, and scrolling through Facebook groups trying to figure out one simple thing: would school be open tomorrow morning?
The weather apps told him how much snow was coming. What they couldn’t tell him was whether his district — with its 42 school buses, its rural routes through hilly terrain, its superintendent who had already used two snow days that season — would cancel school. Standard weather forecasts and school closure decisions are two different problems, and no tool existed that bridged that gap intelligently.
That night, Tayyab started sketching out an algorithm. He had spent years working with atmospheric data, winter storm modeling, and regional weather pattern analysis. He knew the variables that actually drove school closure decisions. What he needed was a platform to bring those variables together, calibrate them by location, and give families a real, data-driven answer — not just a snowfall total.
SnowsDayCalculator.com launched in the winter of 2019 with coverage for the continental United States. Within two months, it had been used by over 50,000 families. By the 2020–2021 school year, it had expanded to Canada and the United Kingdom. Today, it covers 195 countries worldwide, has processed more than 2.4 million predictions, and is trusted by students, parents, teachers, and school administrators who want a smarter way to plan around winter weather.
Our Mission
Our mission is simple: give every family in the world the clearest possible picture of their snow day chances — before they go to bed the night before a winter storm.
We believe that accurate, data-driven information reduces stress. When a parent knows at 9 PM that there’s an 87% chance of school cancellation, they can arrange childcare, communicate with their employer, and prepare their household — instead of lying awake anxiously or scrambling at 5:30 AM. That practical peace of mind is what we built this tool to provide.
We also believe that school closure prediction should be free and accessible to everyone. We have never charged for our calculator, we don’t require an account to use it, and we never will. Winter weather affects everyone equally — a single parent working a shift job deserves the same quality of prediction as anyone else, and we are committed to keeping this tool available to all.
Beyond individual families, we serve a broader educational mission. SnowsDayCalculator.com is used in middle school and high school classrooms as a real-world example of probability, meteorology, and data-driven decision making. Our methodology pages, forecasting guides, and blog content are designed to teach as well as predict.
“To provide every student, parent, and teacher on earth with the most accurate, transparent, and accessible school closure prediction possible — powered by real weather science, not guesswork.”
SnowsDayCalculator.com by the Numbers
These numbers represent real families making real decisions with better information. Every prediction run on our platform feeds back into our historical dataset, continuously improving the accuracy of future forecasts. The more the calculator is used, the smarter it gets — creating a virtuous cycle that benefits every user.
What We Stand For
Five core values guide everything we build, write, and publish at SnowsDayCalculator.com:
Meet the Team
SnowsDayCalculator.com is built and maintained by a small, dedicated team of weather professionals, software engineers, and data analysts who are genuinely passionate about making winter weather information more accessible.
Our Data Sources and Partnerships
The quality of our predictions is only as good as the data we use. SnowsDayCalculator.com integrates real-time weather feeds and historical archives from the world’s most trusted meteorological organizations:
- National Weather Service (NWS) / NOAA: Primary real-time weather data source for all US locations, including hourly forecast updates and severe weather alerts.
- Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC): Primary data source for Canadian forecasting, including provincial wind chill advisories and ice storm warnings.
- Met Office (UK): UK weather data and road condition alerts for British school closure predictions.
- European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF): High-resolution global forecast models used for European and international predictions.
- Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD): German national weather service data for Central European calibration.
- Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA): Japanese snowfall and storm data, particularly critical for our Hokkaido vs. Kanto differential calibration.
- Regional School District Archives: Closure records from thousands of school districts across North America and Europe, maintained in our proprietary historical database.
Our prediction accuracy is independently verified against actual school closure records at the end of each winter season. We publish these accuracy reports on our blog every spring. We have nothing to hide — our track record speaks for itself.
What SnowsDayCalculator.com Is — and Is Not
We are proud of what our tool does, and we are equally committed to being honest about what it doesn’t do. Here is a clear statement of what SnowsDayCalculator.com is and is not:
What We Are
- A data-driven probability estimator that gives families the most accurate possible estimate of school closure chances
- An educational resource that explains the science behind snow day predictions
- A planning tool that helps parents, teachers, and caregivers prepare in advance for potential closures
- A free public service with no paywalls, no ads from weather product sponsors, and no data selling
What We Are Not
- We are not an official school closure announcement service. Only your school district has the authority to cancel school.
- We are not a replacement for your district’s alert system. Always confirm closures through official channels.
- We are not infallible. Weather is inherently uncertain, and our predictions can be wrong — especially in borderline situations.
- We are not affiliated with any school district, government agency, or weather service. We are an independent tool.
